Student Abubakar Umar was shot in his hand, lost
lots of blood, even pretended to be a madman to escape violent Boko
Haram militants. Survivor, who has just graduated from University, tells
about the day when he narrowly escaped his death.
Abubakar Umar will never forget the day in November 2014 in Kano, when he was shot during attack of Boko Haram militants. 26-year-old former student, who has just graduated from American University of Nigeria in Yola with a degree in petroleum chemistry, recollects his memories of the day he narrowly escaped his death.
Abubakar Umar says he was driving his car suddenly noticing people in military disguise coming out of the bush pointing with machine guns at his car. He stopped at first thinking they were soldiers, but after they started shooting at him screaming “Allahu Akbar”, he pressed the accelerator with his foot as quickly as he could. After escaping from Boko Haram ambush, Abubakar realized one of their bullets hit his right arm. “I could have died on that day, I lost so much blood – there wasn’t any medication”.
Bleeding in his car, wounded student just kept on driving hoping to get to a military checkpoint to report the case of Boko Haram attack. But there weren’t any checkpoints – only a threat to come across the terrorists again.
Abubakar Umar says he was so scared he took off his shoes and put mud on his head to look like crazed man. However he was happy enough not to see Boko Haram militants again on that day. “I think the Lord kept me alive for a special reason and one of those reasons was to complete my degree”, he told in his speech at the degree ceremony at the university.
Over the past three weeks, Nigerian troops have rescued more than 400 women from the insurgents.
