Disney has confirmed a new release date for the latest sequel in the money-making Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Although the fourth movie, On Stranger Tides, performed the worst out of all four, it still made over $200 million at the US box office and thus justifies yet another sequel, even though fans have even begun losing interest. Initially titled Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, this fifth one is now scheduled for release on July 7th, 2017 – the same opening weekend as the first two films, release in 2003 and 2006. That is still three years away, but at least they have an actual release date.

Here’s what we know so far. Originally, after the fourth movie On Stranger Tides, was in production Disney considered moving forward on two more back-to-back Pirates sequels to finish the second trilogy. However, development was halted and the project was delayed last year, first reported to be pushed back until 2016. Now it’s being pushed back until 2017 and that may mean they’re revising the script and concept. Norwegian directors Joachim Rønning & Espen Sandberg, who directed On Stranger Tides, will be back for this next movie. But the old title of “Dead Men Tell No Tales” is not confirmed, as it’s still officially known as the Pirates 5 until further notice. That’s the latest for now, but we’ll be keeping one good eye open for updates.
